'He's done it!' Waterford 22-year-old becomes Ireland's youngest person to summit Everest

Adam Sweeney reached the summit of Mount Everest last night
A 22-year-old man from Waterford has become Ireland's youngest person ever to summit Mount Everest.
Adam Sweeney, alongside mountaineer Jason Black and former Mayo footballer Padraig O'Hora, completed their mission in the early hours of this morning.
After 47 days on the mountain and months of preparation, the team have received many congratulations.
They were forced to abandon their first attempt at summiting the world’s highest peak on Tuesday, when they were just 400 metres from the top.
The team recuperated and opted to make a second summit push, which proved to be successful.
"After 20 years, an Irishman is back on the summit of Mount Everest, and Adam Sweeney, the youngest person ever to stand on the summit of Mount Everest, aged 22. Absolutely unbelievable. Success, success, success, absolutely," Jason said from Camp 4, as he suffered an ankle injury, meaning he couldn't complete the summit.

Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth above sea level, reaching a height of 8,848.86 metres (29,031.7 feet) and is located in the Himalayas on the international border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

Adam, a Dunmore East man, decided when he was in Transition Year that he wanted to tackle the mountain and become Ireland's youngest person to do so.
It's not his first achievement either, although it might be his mightiest.
Adam has climbed the highest mountain in every country he's been to and even summited the three highest peaks in England, Scotland, and Wales in just 24 hours with his brother.
He also became Ireland's youngest person to climb Mount Aconcagua in Argentina.
The team are now descending the mountain, having passed Camp 4 at roughly 3 am.
